Here’s an exceptional piece of Ocean Jasper from Madagascar. It has a fabulous mix of contrasting colors, dazzling crystal cavities with lots of “eyes” all in a mesmerizing design. This highly polished (on the front face leaving the rest in its natural state) and uniquely shaped specimen measures approximately 9 3/4″ x 3 3/4″ x 8 3/8″ tall, weighs nearly 14 1/2 pounds and is yet another fabulous creation from our Lapidary Department. Description

This material is a new find from Madagascar. The deposit formed as a rhyolite flow but has been completely silicified. The Rhyolitic eyes or orbs come in an astonishing array of colors and color combinations. The background can be white, pink, green, red, or yellow. Botryoidal formations as well as white and deep green druzy are also common. This deposit has been discovered at the edge of the ocean. It can only be seen and collected at low tide. The area has no road so the material must be transported to civilization by boat. This material is fast becoming a rarity in the Jasper ocean fields, so get one while it is still available. varies in optical density from opaque to semi-transparent. Opal is the national gemstone of Australia, a producer of over 93% of the world’s supply.
