This outstanding specimen is unique as it’s many Ammonites together in matrix and is from Madagascar.  The phenomenal very large Ammonite is accompanied by numerous other Ammonites, Clams, and various other fossils throughout the matrix.   The large Ammonite measures over 8 1/4″ x 6 7/8″ with a shiny finish.  The smaller Ammonite on the opposite side is 3 3/4″ x 3″.  Overall, this extraordinary specimen measures approximately 12″ x almost 9 1/4″ x nearly 6″ and weighs 17 1/4 pounds.  Just an exceptional addition to any fossil collection!

Description

Ammonites are extinct members of the cephalopod group of mollusks. Only a limited number of species have survived to the present day which includes the squid and the chambered nautilus. Ammonites had a multi-chambered shell, and added more chambers as it grew, always living in the outer chamber.  They lived in the Cretaceous period some 63 to 130 million years ago.
