M817: South Dakota Chalcedony – Locality: South Dakota.  Selection: Rough and polished specimen.

Appearance:  A treasure found here in the Black Hills of South Dakota, a great piece of Chalcedony that was cut and polished in our very own Lapidary Department. It will fluoresce bright green color under a SW/UV light.

Description

Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of the minerals quartz and moganite. It has a waxy luster, and may be semitransparent or translucent. It can assume a wide range of colors, but those most commonly seen are white to gray, grayish-blue or a shade of brown ranging from pale to nearly black.
